All About Mountain Bike History
There is a good bit of history and information out there in respect to the background and origins of mountain biking, with some being perceived to be reliable and some that relies on who has the most competitive firm of PRs.
Some are saying that mountain biking started with the Buffalo Soldiers, which was a turn of the century infantry group that built bikes to carry accessories over the rough and tough land. They began in the late 1800′s, over the course of 1300 Km. Their mission was straightforward – to evaluate mountain bikes for military use in the most demanding
terrain.
Others say it was the France’s Club of Velo Cross that originated mountain biking. The club was comprised of 20 active bikers from Paris, who between 1951 and 1956, generated a sport that resembles todays mountain biking.
It possibly could have also been John Fin Scott, who was the earliest mountain biker in the U.S. In 1953 he fabricated what he referred to as a a “Woodsie Bike”, incorporating a diamond frame, balloon tires, flat handle bars, and cantilever brakes. He was more than twenty years head of his time. Even though he remained an off road enthusiast, there were many others at that time who did not share that same enthusiasm.
Presently, we accept that the background of the mountain bike is most evident in California. There are a few areas that claim to be the 1st community for mountain biking, albeit each history book will tell you Marin County.
The sport of mountain biking has made many twists and turns over the last several hundred years. Even though there are a few that agree on different things about the history and the starting point, we know one thing for sure – that one thing has led to yet another and the sport of mountain biking was created.
