Collect Confederate War Bonds; You’ll Find Them Great Conversation Pieces

Assuredly, many folks have encountered Confederate money. They’ve seen genuine bills mounted in a battlefield museum, possibly.  Perhaps as kids they played with reproduction Confederate dollars purchased from a toy store. Not many, though, have ever seen a Confederate bond, or even know what one is.

Confederate war bonds were used to raise funds for vitally needed food and supplies for Rebel soldiers during the conflict. They constituted a means for the Confederate government to raise money by getting its citizens and others to lend to it.  A person would lend money to the southern government and in return receive a bond, which was a inscribed with a written guarantee to pay back the bond purchaser–with interest–beginning on a certain date in the future.

As you can guess, the majority the people who lent good money in support of the Rebel cause never got a dime in return. And so the lenders tucked those Confederate war bonds away in a  chest of drawers or in a box in the attic, never bothering to attempt to redeem the attached coupons, which were now rendered completely valueless by the CSA’s failure to survive.

Nowadays, the bonds that survived these many decades are prized by collectors. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (and other paper collectibles) in the online auction market for a pretty decent return.

If you’ve ever held a Confederate bond certificate, you will have an idea of why people are looking for them. Not least of all, they are very decorative. They’re physically pretty large–very much more impressive than a Confederate dollar bill, for instance–and extensively decorated. They look wonderful displayed on a wall. In addition, they draw attention as a small segment of our history. Most people could not afford to acquire honest-to-goodness Civil War firearm today, but Confederate bond certificates are within the reach of virtually every War Between the States devotee.

The Confederate government had printed a fairly large number of bond issues during the course of the conflict. For every issue, various “denominations” (referring to the bond’s face value) were sold.  These all had a variety of differing decorations, and sometimes even different pape colors, to distinguish them one from the other.

At a time during which even a common loan document could be an exercise in ornateness, CSA bonds abounded in flourishes, including such scenes as fields and cities, mythological figures, and, of course, generals and other heroes of the South.

If you also acquire and frame one of these bonds and put it on display, maybe in a study or office, you will enjoy gazing at it and admiring its arresting, antique appearance. If you’re like me,, you will undoubtedly start trying to feel what it might have been like to be alive in that monumental era and during those particular tumultuous years.

Many Confederate bond issues were actually sold abroad, especially within Britain, not to the desperately impoverished denizens of the South. My “Stonewall” bond came from a hoard uncovered in England in modern times. Such finds come to light every now and then, driving prices down in the collectibles market, however, the dip is usually not long lasting.  Lately I have read that Stonewall Jackson bonds are becoming hard to come across, so I’m very grateful that I was able to get one when I did.

If your interest in Confederate bond certificates perhaps goes beyond merely holding on to and admiring their peculiar beauty and historical legacy, you will discover them to be an excellent entry ticket into what is known as “scripophily.” This is the collecting of old financial certificates, which can include bank instruments, stock certificates, railroad bonds and the like.

If you are interested in exploring this subject in more depth, you can find books, as well as lots of information on the Web pertaining to CSA bonds. You should learn a lot about their historical background and then attend coin shows where dealers sometimes have them for sale. If you’re just interested in the art aspect, you can buy one or two of the more common examples fairly inexpensively.  If you are interested in trading for profit or as a business, naturally you will need to seriously study these bonds, their various issues and how to grade them for condition, and be ready for the give-and-take of haggling with other dealers.

Now, leave it to an enterprising British woman to become the world’s authority on making good money–even earning one’s living–selling pieces of American paper, not only old money and bonds but even pages torn out from old magazines.  You can discover more about this woman’s surprising eBay paper selling method here.
